Karajan artists in interview: Anna Tomowa-Sintow

Bulgarian soprano Anna Tomowa-Sintow was one of Karajan’s favourite singers from the early 1970s up to his very last concerts and recordings.

Starting with the first performance of Orff’s “de temporum fine comoedia”, Karajan and Tomowa-Sintow recorded 41 works for films, records and broadcasts and performed 89 concerts and opera evenings. She was Karajan’s Marschallin, Donna Anna, Figaro Countess and Elsa and was especially valued for her interpretations of sacred works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Bruckner, Brahms and Verdi. It is no surprise that Anna Tomowa-Sintow was the soprano Karajan designated for his own funeral requiem.

In September 2021, Anna Tomowa-Sintow celebrated her 80th birthday. As part of her “Karajan / Mozart” documentary, Julia Binek interviewed her about her work with Karajan. Watch the entire interview here.
